The team from SBS News visited our pro bono client The Bread & Butter Project at its Marrickville bakery before Christmas, to take a look at how refugees are rebuilding their lives through the daily practice of breadmaking.
As a social enterprise, The Bread & Butter Project provides paid training, English language support and clear employment pathways for people who face significant barriers to work after arriving in Australia. Since launching in 2013, The Bread & Butter Project has grown into a thriving operation, producing more than one million baked goods each year while supporting dozens of trainees through its intensive three-month program. Graduates frequently move into long-term employment across the food industry or go on to establish businesses of their own.
During its visit, SBS spoke to Ben, an Afghan refugee and trainee baker, who is working alongside program graduate and now trainer Samia to learn technical baking skills, while building confidence and a sense of belonging in Australia through sustainable employment. Working with other trainees from diverse backgrounds, Ben describes the bakery as feeling like a family — a place grounded in shared purpose and mutual support.
The story was featured on SBS Small Business Secrets, with accompanying TV and podcast coverage proudly facilitated by Polymer Studios as part of its ongoing work to support The Bread & Butter Project’s important purpose-led mission. The feature highlights how thoughtful storytelling and strategic media placement can amplify the reach of impact-driven businesses – and the success of The Bread & Butter Project is a powerful reminder that when people are given the right tools, trust and support, the results can be truly life-changing.
